We recently asked which restaurant in Kota Kinabalu can be considered as a Heritage Establishment? We work with Heritage Sabah to come out with a list of “heritage establishment” and one of their recommendations is Winner Hotel Restaurant.
Winner Hotel Restaurant is over 60 years old now and it used to be a popular place for a wedding banquet. Over time, hotels and bigger restaurant open in Kota Kinabalu and Winner Hotel Restaurant deem to be outdated and too small for a regular wedding banquet which easily demands over 50 tables.
Winner Hotel Restaurants is located on the 2nd floor of Winner Hotel Building at Kampung Air.
Old settings in Winner Hotel Restaurant. Winner Hotel Restaurant serves Cantonese as most of the chefs were originated from Hong Kong. The owner then requests the chef to come out with local Hakka dishes as they need to serve to guest and there is no restaurant around KK which serve authentic Hakka dishes.
One of the signature dishes at Winner Hotel Restaurant is Steamed Pork with Salted Fish (咸鱼蒸肉饼)
Crispy skin chicken, another signature dish at Winner Hotel Restaurant.
Chinese steamed chicken served in a traditional plate
fried dory fish with light soy sauce, a newer creation to caters to the children.
The price is reasonable as the restaurant want to keep the price affordable to everyone.
Winner Hotel Restaurant is currently managed by the 3rd generation and run by the old staffs who had been working at Winners Hotel Restaurant for more than 30 years. The head chef is over 70 years old and no new chefs are in line to take over the operation. The future for Winners Hotel Restaurant is uncertain and we can only hope they will be around for many years to come.
*Winner Hotel Restaurant is selected as Heritage Establishment by Heritage Sabah for Sabah Food Awards 2016
