We love Steamboat and always on the lookout for good hotpot (Steamboat) place in Kota Kinabalu but always dissapointed with the offering in Kota Kinabalu. We pleasently surprised to bump into a Mala Hot pot at KK times square. 后院 Backyard is a small restaurant serving Sichuan Dishes and Mala SiChuan Hot Pot. Mala (麻辣) is a spicy and numbing sauce originating from SiChuan region of China.
The owner is originated from China and we can see the decoration and tools are mostly imported from China.
There are less than 20 tables in the restaurant. We order our hotpot which can be customized according to the spiciness. We choose medium spicy and mix of herbal and Mala Soup.
Meats, vegetables and side dishes are available for order to go with the hotpot. Price per date depending on the meats/side dishes. This slice Lamb plater cost RM20
Overall, the soup is not spicy as the one we had in Chengdu as their caters to local tastebuds. We will be back again when we crave for spicy and mala soup.
