One of the must eat food in Sarawak is Sarawak Laksa. One of the best Laksa in Kuching can be found at Chong Hui Cafe at Ban Hock Road. The laksa at Chong Hui Cafe is made famous by Anthony Bourdain when he visited twice the laksa at Chong Hui Cafe in 2005 was for Travel Channel’s No Reservation and in 2015 for CNN’s Parts Unknown.
Choon Hui Cafe opens at 7.30am. There are lots of people in the morning and things usually finish before lunch. Parking space is limited.
Famous Choon Hui Laksa, Sarawak laksa is very different from Penang Laksa. The Sarawak Laksa is served in the shrimp-based broth that is made to thicken with coconut milk with vermicelli rice noodles (bee hoon). Sarawak laksa is served with generous amounts of crunchy bean sprouts, a few boiled prawns and garnished with shredded chicken and slivers of egg omelet. Thick sambal paste that is usually served on the side for extra spice.
We tried Poh Lam Laksa and we prefer the Choon Hui Laksa as the broth is thicker and more flavorful.
The place is always packed with locals and tourists. There are also different stalls at Choon Hui Cafe Malaysian coffee shop with roti kahwin (kaya toast), kolo Mee, and popiah.
The popiah is another must eat at Choon Hui Cafe
